Monday Morning Update, March 10, 2009

The Week That Was: Mom and Dad were in from Pennsylvania this past weekend. The visit went well. Abbie was exicted to see them. It was great because it was 75 degrees as well. It's been a stressful week with school and a few other things.

Church Review: We had our 11:07 service join our 11:00 Traditional service. It went pretty well overall. There were some awkward moments, but overall I think the worship time was meaningful.

Where I Am At the Moment: School. Waiting to go home.

On My To-Do List This Week: I need to get cracking on some Holy Week/Easter stuff. It's going to be here soon. I also need to do some work for DCOM this week. I would love to go golfing on Friday if it is nice enough.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie had a full 5 minute phone conversation last night, which was awesome. She is loving her music class as well. I got to go this week and square danced with her. Great fun.

Books I am in the Midst Of: Seminary Stuff.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I listened to several new CD's this week. The first is Demon Hunter's Live from Nashville CD. The second was the new Fiction Family CD. Finally, I got The Fray's new one. While I haven't listened too indepth, I liked what I heard.

Monday Morning Update: February 9th, 2009

The Week That Was: This past week was a mixed bag. A week ago, the entire LaMotte family had some form of a virus. Fever, ear aches, etc. Thankfully, that has past. Last Tuesday, I Started up another round of classes. I am signed up for four classes (making me full-time), but I think I am dropping my one class because I want to be home more. Andrea had a baby shower in New Jersey on Saturday, so Abbie and I had a Daddy-Daughter day together. We had a blast. Now I am ready for another week!

Church Review: I am actually not going to review this week, but the previous week. I began a series called "Love is the Movement" where were looking at the call to Love God/Love Neighbor. At 11:07, we tried something different and sat at round tables, and rather than me speaking at the congregation, I asked a series of questions and allowed the tables to explore the scriptures. It worked pretty well for the first time. It was exciting to hear the tables talk about the topic of the day and work through some of the practical stuff. We'll definately be doing this again.

Where I Am At the Moment: I am currently in the office. I would like to get some music picked out for this weekend. I'll be heading to the gym soon as well.

On My To-Do List This Week: Pick out music, work on seminary homework. I also neeed to contact some people regarding our Guatemala trip.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie is a trip. She is fully healthy after being sick and very expressive. We went outside to play yesterday while large flocks of geese were flying over head (I think geese fly in gaggles). Abbie was telling the geese to go away. It was so funny!

Books I am in the Midst Of: It's seminary time again, so I am only doing required reading. I am working on Miracles by C.S. Lewis, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, New Testament Theology by I. Howard Marshall, and a book called Called and Committed (can't remember the author).

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I've heard a lot of old-school Weezer this week. I think I will be downloading some this week.

How I Feel About this week: Upbeat.

Monday Morning Update: December 22nd

The Week That Was: This was my first full week with out school/work in a while. I spent a whole week getting things done in the office and at home. It felt really good to be able to do that. Friday night, I had a wedding rehersal and the Fusion Christmas Party. On Saturday, except for 2 hours where I was gone for the wedding, it was a great family day. Part of that was spent with Erin and Becky, home from college. It was great to visit with them.

Church Review: I preached at the 9:30 and 11:07 service. I think that overall that it went well. I had to change a few things on the fly because one of our teenagers was killed in a car accident the night before. It was a sad morning to say the least.

Where I Am At the Moment: I am waiting for staff meeting to start. I have a busy next two days leading up to Christmas.

On My To-Do List This Week: Let's see, put 8 services on the computer for projection (4 Christmas Eve services, 4 Sunday Services). Write a Christmas Eve sermon. Go to the Golf Course and use a Gift Certificate. Study the Greek Alphabet for a test on Monday. Oh yeah, Christmas is in there too!

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie has begun to call me "mommy". I've heard that this is a stage that many babies go through. It's pretty cute overall. She does call my daddy some still. She has also been asking "Where did it go?" with here hands up. It's so cute. She will be so much fun Christmas morning.

Book I am in the Midst Of: Last week, I finished "The Great Emergence," while this week, I am hoping to finish N.T. Wright's "Surprised by Hope." I have two chapters to go.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: Christmas Music.

How I Feel About this week: Merry.

Monday Morning Update (Tuesday Style): December 9th, 2008

The Week That Was: What a week. I finished up my last week of classes this past week. I turned in a 16 page paper. Andrea's parents came down for a visit. As soon as they left, my cousin Shannon came in for a visit. I wrote an 11 page paper. I preached. It has been a whirlwind week. But, I am finished with all my work, and now just have to study for a final tomorrow night. Then I can breathe for a couple weeks.

Church Review: I preached at our 9:30 and 11:07 services. I thought, after the fact, that I could have done the end of my sermon a little differently to be a little more effective. I talked about whether we are preparing for Christ or Christmas. My cousin Shannon is a missionary in Peru and she was in all the services sharing about what God is doing there through the ministry she is connected with. It was exciting to hear, and I was really proud to have family who is serving God around the world.

Where I Am At the Moment: I am in my office, getting ready to go home to eat lunch and begin studying for my BIblical Interpretation final. I have Abbie tonight while Andrea has a girl's night out. I'm looking forward to the time with my little girl!

On My To-Do List This Week: Besides the already mentioned final, I need to put up some Christmas lights and work on my Dec. 21 and 24 sermons. Friday is my first Sabbath with no school work. I am planning on spending the morning reading and then watching a movie...something I haven't done in a while. Andrea and I are going out for our anniversary Friday night.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie has had a cold. She has been fussy. She is an amazing blessing. She is copying more and more words. The best is when she says "Touchdown!" just like her daddy!

Book I am in the Midst Of: I'm going to finish The Great Emergence on Friday. It talks about the major shifts in Christianity that seems to happen about every 500 years. Pretty interesting stuff.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I listened to Enya's "O Come O Come Emmanuel" this week. Haunting.

How I Feel About this week: I can't wait until Friday.

Monday Morning Update: November 17, 2008

The Week That Was: This was certainly not a normal week by any stretch of the means. Monday-Wednesday, I was in at pastoral leadership training along with our pastoral staff down in Rehoboth Beach. I have to admit, my expecations were pretty low for the training. Thankfully, the training was excellent. While I have heard most of what was taught, it was a really good refresher, and really good to process it with some of our staff. We have more to process, but it could lead to some interesting discussions. As soon as I left training, I headed up to Philly for school. I spent a lot of time in the library, which was good. I only have two weeks of class left. It so hard to believe because I have a lot of work to get down yet.

Church Review: Church went pretty well today. I did not preach, so played a little different role as just the worship leader. Pastor Phyllis gave a good message and the gathering structure was good. I wish our 11:07 gathering had a little more consistency. We'll finally do some marketing about the gathering when our community mailings go out in December.

Where I Am At the Moment: It's actually Sunday afternoon as I write this. I just finished my theology paper and watching the Eagles try and blow a game to the Bungals.

On My To-Do List This Week: On Monday, I have to pick my mom up from the airport as our daycare is closed and she is watching Abbie for the week. I have to pick out music for the community thanksgiving service next Sunday. The rest of the week will be devoted to school work. I have two 10-15 page papers due, plus I have to build a small website on an aspect of Methodist History.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie finished up one round of teething about two weeks ago, and I think that she has another round coming up. Some of her "I" teeth are ready to come in. Abbie is beginning to enunciate more and more words.

Book I am in the Midst Of: I am mostly reading seminary stuff. Not much else.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I purchased two CD's this week. The first was a Vineyard Worship CD called Sweetly Broken. The title track is by Jeremy Riddle and is powerful. I don't know that I could pull that song off, but it speaks to me every time. Otherwise, I didn't immediately hear anything that stood out. I also picked up Charlie Hall's new CD called Bright Sadness. It was pretty good.

How I Feel About this week: I can almost begin to smell the turkey and pumpkin pie!

Monday Morning Update: November 3, 2008

The Week That Was: Not a bad week overall. Although I got very little done the way I wanted to get it done. Friday's are usually reserved for sermon writing and school work, but instead I had somone at the house doing some repairs. Some good news of the week was my laptop crashed back in September (not the good news), but after a month of waiting, I might be getting an upgraded one back. Hopefully soon. Andrea, Abbie and I went to Abbott's Pond on Sunday for a nature walk. She stopped to pick up lots of leaves along the way. I also had lunch with Becky (from my church), Kathleen and Mel (From Delanco camp). They are all students at Eastern University. It was great to see them all.

Church Review: I generally write my sermons out, and the preach without reading from the manuscript. Normally you should trust the flow of what you've written. I was not fully happy with my sermon so I tried (during the 9:30 service) to make it something that it was not. Fortunately, I did not make that mistake at 11:07. It was a busy morning at church with stewardship stuff, All Saints Day, Mission team commissioning, and communion.

Where I Am At the Moment: It's 6:30 a.m...just finished devotions and I am waiting to go get Abbie up and ready for the day.

On My To-Do List This Week: School work and a sermon. That really about says it.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Last week, I wrote that maybe we're getting a break from Abbie teething. I was wrong. I've been awake at 4:30 a.m. that last few mornings as she wakes up with uncomfortable gums. Poor girl. When Abbie is ready for dinner she has begun to tell us "Eat, eat, eat!" rather emphatically.

Book I am in the Midst Of: I am mostly reading seminary stuff. Not much else.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I heard a few songs off of Grits' new CD on iTunes (and downloaded a few). Pretty good stuff. The problem I have with Grits is at one time I thought they were innovative with their sound...now they seem more chameleon like by doing whatever is popular at the time. Bring back the old Grits!

How I Feel About this week: It should be a good week. Andrea has off on Election Day, so we're voting (and I hope you are to!) and then going out to breakfast and to a park together with Abbie. That will certainly be the highlight of my week.

Monday Morning Update: October 27, 2008

The Week That Was: This past week was pretty good. Saturday was my birthday. I turned 30 for those of you who missed it in a previous post. Thanks to everyone who sent birthday wishes. It meant a lot. My mom and aunt came out for a visit for the weekend. It was good to see them. As far as school goes, I am officially halfway through the semester. We registered for classes last week. I will be doing a J-Term intensive class on New Testament Greek in January, which means I'll be living in Philly all week throughout January. I also took the plunge to go full-time again next semester. I think I can do it!

Church Review: This was the first Sunday that I preached in a while. I am doing a series on worship. This Sunday's message focused on Our Response to Who God Is. While I don't always take much stock in immediate feedback from a sermon, a few people spoke with me that they had some good discussions about the sermon yesterday afternoon. I think that is always a goal of mine is to preach something that begins a conversation about our relationship with God.

Where I Am At the Moment: I am at home right now. I have to do a Biblical Interpretation project this afternoon before Charge Conference tonight.

On My To-Do List This Week: I have a clergy meeting tomorrow where I am presenting some stuff in regards to background checks. I am one of 3 pastors around 30...so most of the pastors have no clue who I am. But it will be good to contribute to the meeting. I am also working on a college age mission trip this week.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie has had about 4 teeth come in during the last three weeks. She has started evening out in her mood, so maybe there is a break coming. She is a talker. She gabs and gabs. It is fun trying to figure out what she is saying.

Book I am in the Midst Of: I am mostly reading seminary stuff. Not much else.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: While I did receive a new iPod for my birthday (thanks andrea!), I haven't heard any new music. I am in a busy school cycle again.

How I Feel About this week: I am feeling good about the week ahead. I think Andrea and I have some time schedule to get away together on Saturday. Once I get through school, it will be a great week!

Monday Morning Update: October 13, 2008

The Week That Was: The week was pretty crazy. I missed one of my seminary classed because Abbie needed picked up from Day care. Once I left Delaware for school on Wednesday, I did not make it back to Delaware until Sunday evening. Five days on the road. The reason, was the Delanco Fall Retreat, which I was deaning. The retreat went really well and gave us the opportunity to visit with some good friends. There was a nice move of the Spirit for students to surrender their lives to God on Saturday night. Our speaker, Dustin Staples, did an excellent job with each of the messages. It was great to see him and Ashley. Becky and I co-led worship, each of us taking 2 services and leading. She did a wonderful job.

Church Review: Wasn't there. But I have heard that the guest worship leader did a great job.

Where I Am At the Moment: I am at home. Abbie is napping. Her daycare is closed today for Columbus Day. Which is fine by me because I don't really feel like doing much.

On My To-Do List This Week: Now that the retreats are over, its time to concentrate even more on School. This is reading week, so I have a couple mid-terms to do and some other projects. All of it managable once I get organized. I have some paperwork to catch up on at work as well.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie had 2 molars come in this week. It hasn't been terrible...she's just not been herself at times. She is also getting more shy around people that she doesn't know.

Book I am in the Midst Of: I skimmed the book "The History of the United Bretheren Church" the other day. I have some books to read this week for school.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I downloaded Anberlin's new CD this past week. It is really good. They re-recorded one of my favorite songs "Feel Good Drag". Great ear candy. If I haven't posted it here before, you really should listen to Brooke Fraser's new CD "Albertine". Very well done. (She's the author of the Hillsong song "Hosanna.")

How I Feel About this week: I'm tired. I feel like I have a lot of school work to do this week, but it will be better once I get organized.

Monday Morning Update: October 6, 2008

The Week That Was: This past week was pretty good overall. It was a pretty straight forward week until the weekend. This was our annual Fall Retreat. Because of attendance, we made some tweaks to the retreat, but overall it went really well. (honestly, better than I anticipated). Randy Chambers from FCA spoke at the retreat and really challenged us to surrender our lives to God. I believe it was a good weekend for the students that were there as well. On Sunday Night, we had some of our college students/young adults over for Bible Study and the Steeler game (with iCarly thrown in there for good measure)

Church Review: From what I heard, it went well. One of my students, Becky, led worship for us. From what I heard, she did a great job with limited resources (her guitar was the only instrument!).

Where I Am At the Moment: I'm at my office computer getting ready for a staff lunch at Applebees. Sweet.

On My To-Do List This Week: I have a three page paper that is stressing me out. It's on the Trinity. It really shouldn't be stressing me out, but I really want to get my paper done well. More for my own understanding than the grade. I am also getting ready for another retreat this upcoming weekend at Delanco Camp.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: I'm not really sure. I've been gone enough this week that I haven't seen as much of Abbie as I would like to.

Book I am in the Midst Of: Even in the midst of seminary reading, I picked up Rob Bell's new book Jesus Wants to Save Christians. I may start reading it this weekend.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: I'm hoping to download Anberlin's new CD today or tomorrow. They are one of my favorite bands.

How I Feel About this week: Coming off the retreat, I'm exhausted and cranky...hopefully that will change in a day or so.

Monday Morning Update: September 29th

The Weekend That Was: This past weekend was pretty nice. On Friday, Andrea and I stayed home and hung out with the little munchkin. On Saturday, a Nor'Easter came through, so it rained a lot. We were still able to go on a family bike ride. We also went out for dinner together, which was nice. I only get three hours sleep on Saturday night because I was stressing about some things coming up work wise. Sunday worship was good. We announced our leadership pledges for our capital campaign. While people clapped, there was a brief moment of hesitation before clapping...so i don't know if that meant anything. It's kinda strange doing a captial campaign when the government is planning a 700 billion dollar rescue of many banks. We certainly didn't forsee that!

Church Review: As I mentioned above, church went pretty well. One of our members shared her testimony of how God has provided for her. It was really moving! It is so amazing to hear the stories of regular people and how God is working in their lives. Testimonies are such an excellent medium for shairng the realities of God's hand at work in our lives.

Where I Am At the Moment: I'm in my office on a Tuesday (retro-actice MMUpdate.).

On My To-Do List This Week: Besides seminary work, I have two retreats that I am incharge of over the next two weeks. I am doing preparations for that. I am also beginning working on a sermon series called iWorship that will look at some different facets of worsip and take a look at what worship should be.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: This girl is too cute. On Wednesday, I was at seminary. Abbie brings out a picture of me, shows it to Andrea, and then gives it a kiss. Later, when I call them, I speak with Abbie on the phone and she says hi to me (first time saying hi to someone on the phone). When Andrea pulled the phone away, she reaches out and gives me a kiss over the phone. Too cute!

Book I am in the Midst Of: See last week's list.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: Too busy to listen to new music this week. I
listened to The Robbie Seay Band to get ready for worship. They are great!

How I Feel About this week: Can't wait until the next two weeks are over!

Monday, September 22, 2008

Monday Morning Update: September 22, 2008

The Weekend That Was: Talk about a busy week. I am mostly in the church office on Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday before heading to seminary. I had a District Clergy meeting on Tuesday of last week, which put an iron in my week. The week flew by. Our new youth pastor, Steven Wiseman, arrived on Tuesday and moved into his new place on Wednesday. We had Steven and his family over for dinner on Friday, which was a lot of fun. The weekend was a combination of busy and lazy. I didn't have a lot of school work, so I took a little break from that. One annoying note, because I live in Sussex County in Delaware, my two CBS stations were carrying the Browns-Ravens game rather than the Steelers-Eagles game. Andrea and I have had that game marked on our calendar for some time now. It was frustrating not to watch...although Pittsburgh lost.

Church Review: Church went pretty well. We are in the middle of our capital campaign. Our lay leader shared a testimony of the importance that Avenue Church has played in her life and faith development. It was moving to hear her story.

Where I Am At the Moment: Counting down the minutes until 12:30 b/c that's when I'm going to lunch. I'm hungry! Otherwise I'm in my office right now.

On My To-Do List This Week: This week is "get-ahead" week. I have no seminary projects, so I have been doing my reading and working on projects that are due 2-3 weeks out. I am going to have to work ahead as much as possible to stay up on this semester.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: To teeth or not to teeth, that is the questions. Abbie is giving us signs of working on her incisors/molars...but then again, we've seen some of those signs since the first of July. On Saturday, I get her up from her nap and told her we were going outside to the playground...to which her reply was, "Oh Wow!" To cute for words.

Book I am in the Midst Of: I thought I would share a few books that I have to read for seminary. Here are four out of around 17 books that I have to read this semester.
  • Living God- Thomas Oden (Systematic Theology)
  • Sexism and God-Talk: Toward a Feminist Theology- Ruether (Systematic Theology)
  • Grasping God's Word- Duvall and Hayes (Biblical Interpretation)
  • World Methodism- Cracknell and White (Methodist History)
Music That Caught My Attention This Week: Too busy to listen to new music this week. I listened to The Robbie Seay Band to get ready for worship. They are great!

How I Feel About this week: Relaxed.

Monday, September 15, 2008

Monday Morning Update: September 15, 2008

The Weekend That Was: It was a mixed bag on the weekend. On Friday, I was off (which is good) and was trying to get a buch of work for seminary done and my brand new laptop crashed (which is not good). So I spent a good deal of time with the manufacturer to ensure that it did, in fact, crash. Now I am waiting for them to send shipping stuff to send it away. We all went to New Jersey on Friday. Andrea went to the Women of Faith conference with her mom, while I stayed at the Logan's with Abbie. Saturday was alright. Hanging out with Abbie was good. Trying to read systematic theology was rough. Sunday was nice in that it was kinda lazy. Seeing the Steelers beat up on the Browns is always good.

Church Review: We had our first official 11:07 service yesterday. It went well. Since we have 2 services going on at the same time, and an important capital campaign, we recorded the 9:30 sermon to DVD and show it at 11:07 since Earle was in the sanctuary at the traditional service. That went pretty well. (There are tons of churches that do that every week) We began a new young married couples Bible Study last night as well and it is off to a good start. Out of the couples there, Andrea and I are the oldest..which is kinda scary.

Where I Am At the Moment: I should be at the gym, but it is so hard to make it to the gym and back and then get to work on time. I know, I'm pretty good at rationalizing.

On My To-Do List This Week: Nothing backbreaking...although I need to continue to be diligent in my seminary work. Our new youth pastor arrives this week, so I will be making myself available as much as possible.

What Abbie is Up To This Week: Abbie is continuing to increase her vocab. When we say "Amen" after prayers at meals or before bed, Abbie says "Amen" as well. Pretty cute.

Book I am in the Midst Of: I am dropping this one from the list, unless I run into a really good book on my seminary reading list. I won't be doing much recreational reading for awhile. I did pick up "The Shack" the other day, but I can't see myself reading it before Christmas.

Music That Caught My Attention This Week: Alright, I listened to some new music thanks to Relevent TV being back on the web. I have been listening to Lady Sovreign all week long. She is from the UK and is better than 99% of the rappers here in the states. Very catchy. It stays in my head all day long.

How I Feel About this week: Optimistic for a good week.

Monday, September 08, 2008

Monday Morning Update- September 8, 2008

the weekend that was: I began back at seminary this past week. It was great to see some friends who I haven't seen since May. Seminary is a combination of a lot of reading, decent discussions, and some good friends. The drive up to seminary was almost unbearable as my air conditioning does not work and it was over 90 degrees outside. It's a 2 hour ride up to school!

Church Review: We had our fall kick-off services outside under a tent. This is our fourth year for doing it. We had a beautiful morning for the services even though Tropical Storm Hannah had just come through the day before. Earle started a four week series called "Journey of Faith" as we enter into our capital campaign. It all went pretty well.

where i am at the moment: I am at home when I should be working out at the gym. It is so hard to get to the gym and back on staff meeting days. I'll be trying to get to the gym this afternoon.

On to-do list this week: I need to do some reading for school and finish a paper that is almost done. I also need to meet with some leaders who are taking over some new leadership positions in the church.

What Abbie is up to: Abbie is back to being silly. Her vocabulary is also growing. She is beginning to repeat more and more words. Some of them are hard to distinguish, but they are there. It's pretty exciting.

book i’m in the midst of: I finished the John Marks book I've been working on and hope to put up a brief review about it later this week.

music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: I might drop this line. I hardly listen to new music anymore. My iPod rarely gets loaded with new music. (That's because it's full!)

How I feel about this week: I'm looking forward to the week. It should be a good one.

One word- School. Uggh.

Monday, September 01, 2008

Monday Morning Update

the weekend that was: It's Labor Day weekend. Andrea's parents were in for most of the weekend. Abbie had a fever during the early part, so we could go to the beach on Friday as planned. Saturday, I golfed with Andrea's dad and two friends from church. Beautiful course. I hit the ball really well on the front nine, and then looked like I have never played before on the back nine. Sunday was Sunday (see below)

Church Review: Worship was alright. For a holiday weekend, we had a decent turnout and people seemed engaged for the most part. I preached for the second week on Jesus' teachings on the Kingdom. This week was a little more difficult than last, but I think it went alright. It was week two of our new service. We had just over 30 there. As I said last week, I think this number will go up in a couple of weeks. The new service is nice because it is so small an intimate.

where i am at the moment: I am at home enjoying a few minutes before Andrea and Abbie wake up.

On to-do list this week: It's a short week this week. I'll be getting ready for the weekend services, but also updating a procedural policy for our church. And, I start school this week, which means I'll be spending 30 hours in Philadelphia.

What Abbie is up to: More teething. She's been running a low grade fever for four days. On Sunday, she screamed most of the day/afternoon. We took her to the ER yesterday because we were certain she had an ear infection, and Tuesday was a long time to wait to get to the doctor. After screaming all the way until we got to the ER, when we got to the waiting room, she was running around as if nothing was wrong. But it turns out she does have an ear infection, so we got some antibiotics. We're just waiting on the teeth!

book i’m in the midst of: I have not made much progress on the two I mentioned last week. They were Suprised By Hope by N.T. Wright, and Reasons to Believe by John Marks.

music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: Nothing. I listen to a new worship CD by john Augee and did not like it at all.

How I feel about this week: One word- School. Uggh.

Monday, August 25, 2008

Monday Morning Update: August 25, 2008

the weekend that was: It was a so-so weekend. Friday night, we went over to a friends house and had a great dinner. Saturday we hung out and went down to the outlets and out to dinner. Sunday we were at home most of the day. It was good to be home, but nothing spectacular.

Church Review: What does a response to God in worship look like? Can you stand with your hands in your pockets and truly respond to God? Well, you can. Do 250 people respond in the same way? I doubt it, but that is what happened Sunday. I thought the music was good, the message was to the point about living our lives as a worship response...and then, hands in pockets as we close. I am really feeling that we need to get to October to do our series on worship and what it is.

On another note, we began a new service Sunday with 35 people. It was nice being in the more intimate group. It will get larger when Sunday School kicks in. But as far as first weeks go, it was alright.

where i am at the moment: Just finished staff meeting and sitting in my office.

On to-do list this week: I have to schedule some of our leadership for our worship gatherings and prepare a sermon. A little lighter week this week than last week.

What Abbie is up to: Abbie is silly. Andrea got a musical birthday card with Cindi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun on it. Abbie opens it up, the music plays, and Abbie dances around the living room. We really need to have a video camera out when she does this.

book i’m in the midst of: I have not made much progress on the two I mentioned last week. They were Suprised By Hope by N.T. Wright, and Reasons to Believe by John Marks.

music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: I got Family Force 5's new CD, Dance of Die, from Best Buy the other day. There are a few really good songs (Fever is at the top of the list). And while the disc certainly fits who FF5 is, there are less guitars and more beeps. There is a 80's New Wave sound in the midst of it. While I would give their freshman CD five stars, their sophomore disc would only get 3. Not bad, but not great.

how i’m feeling about this week: Hopeful that it will be a great week. No meetings on Monday or Tuesday, which means more time with the family.

Monday Morning Update

the weekend that was: The weekend went by pretty quick, but it was a good one. On Friday, we took 8 young adults camping and whitewater rafting. It was a blast to be together. The rapids weren't as big as I had hoped, but it was still great to spend that much time together outdoors. On Sunday, I spent 13 consecutive hours at church. After 3 worship services, we had an Eagle Scout ceremony for one of our students, a surprise birthday party for another, and youth pastor interview. Then we met with our college students until 12:30 a.m. Essentially, I worked a 17 hour day on Sunday.

Church Review: Several thoughts about worship. First, I preached yesterday. I was happy with the sermon content...it was on the life of Joseph and how he extended mercy to his brothers/family when they came seeking help during the famine, and how as Christians we are to extend mercy to those around us. I had some positive feedback....not in the "nice sermon" way, but that some people were challenged by the message to strive to show mercy in their family or work situations.

Also, Erin and Becky picked out the music and Rock n Roll church returned. It is hard to believe that they are leaving for college. They have been apart of the worship gathering for 5 years and have each volunteered over 1000 hours during that time. It will be a big hole to fill.

where i am at the moment: I am home in my pj's, really needing to get ready for work.

On to-do list this week: This week is my study week, which means I will be at various locales working on getting through my list of books I wanted to finish this summer. I will also be doing sermon planning for the entire fall. Also on my list is prep our fellowship hall for the launch of our new worship service on Sunday.

What Abbie is up to: Abbie really missed her mommy and daddy while we were rafting. I still think she is teething. She is honestly never cranky (if she has slept well, which she almost always does.), and she has been cranky this weekend. Again, no physical evidence, but I think they are in the works.

book i’m in the midst of: I have not made much progress on the two I mentioned last week. They were Suprised By Hope by N.T. Wright, and Reasons to Believe by John Marks.

music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: I have not listened to much music this week. I have listened to Delirious' Kingdom of Comfort CD. I feel perpetually let down by Delirious. I saw them in concert at Ichthus several years ago, and it ranks as one of the most moving shows I have ever seen. They have the talent and the ability to be an amazing rock band...yet, to me, they seem to stop short of doing that. I wasn't overly impressed with the new release.

how i’m feeling about this week: relieved that last week is over.

Monday Morning Update

It's Monday. Nothing helps a Monday out like routine to help one settle into the week to come. So I am introducing a Monday blog that I will hopefully use each Monday to look back on the weekend and look towards the week ahead. Marko at ysmarko.com uses this, and I am going to shamelessly steal it.

the weekend that was: I actually wrote about this yesterday, but the Pirates-Phillies game plus golf = a pretty good weekend.

Church Review: Worship at Avenue was pretty good yesterday. Pastor Phyllis spoke and there was a nice response as people came to the altar and were prayed with. We may have threw some people off with the worship team flipping sides. I felt different leading worship from the left side of the stage. Strange.

where i am at the moment: I am sitting at my office computer at the church.

on my to-do list this week: I have a busy week ahead. I am prepping a sermon for Sunday and working on some capital campaign stuff for September. We begin interviewing candidates for our Youth Pastor vacancy. The family is going to Cape May on Thursday for a get away day. Andrea and I are taking 8 college students white water rafting on Friday/Saturday. And tonight (Monday) is date night with Andrea. *Whew*

What Abbie is up to: Right now, Abbie is showing considerably more clingy-ness than she has in the past month or two. She is a very independant girl, so this is a little suprising. It's tough to clean the house or cook a meal when she just wants to be held, near one us. We have a suspicsion that a new tooth could be in the works. (but we've thought that for several weeks now)

book i’m in the midst of: Suprised By Hope by N.T. Wright, and Reasons to Believe by John Marks.

music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: I have been listening to The Classic Crime's new CD, The Silver Cord. I also downloaded Brooke Fraser's song Shadowfeet this week. She is a member of Hillsong United's worship team and authored the powerful worship song Hosanna. On her own, she is a rising star down under and has a new CD out.

how i’m feeling about this week: Busy
